Deciding on HD or RAW

Deciding whether HD or RAW streams will be recorded over depends on a number of factors. The respective advantages and disadvantages of the formats and, above all, of the desired workflow in post-production must be taken into consideration.

Our recommendation

For productions which are pressed for time and consequently have to save time during the post-production or color correction, we recommend the HD workflow, because there is no need to debayer the data and the material will be copied quickly. The HD-signal (standardized SMPTE 292M) can be recorded via the HD-SDI interface of the HS-2 either to the WEISSCAM Digimag DM-2 or to an HD recorder (for example Sony SRW1 or Sony HDCAM SR) or directly via an HD-SDI Capture-Card to the computer. The HD workflow saves rendering and copying time up to 4 times and the signal is accepted by most recorders. However the HD workflow is only available in the HD-formats 720p and 1920x1080, it offers two bits of information less than the RAW material and later corrections in the post-production are not as in-depth.

For production which envision color correction or an extensive post-production, we recommend the RAW workflow, because the 12bit uncompressed RAW Data offer a bigger freedom of color correction and post-editing. Furthermore in the “direct recording mode” the RAW workflow has the additional advantage of recording up to 120 frames per second (without buffering to the internal RAM memory) to the Digimag DM-2.

But the image material has still to be debayered and color-corrected and the RAW workflow involves significantly more rendering and copying time than the HD workflow and also needs much more disc space.

General

The 2K format is only possible in conjunction with the RAW workflow. The HD-output of the HS-2 offers in that case only a scaled 1920x1080 preview signal.

The Weisscam RAW Data can be edited and debayered via WeisscamWare or Iridas FrameCycler and Speedgrade.
